Biodiversa+ is recruiting a full-time Biodiversity Monitoring Officer to support the implementation of its Work Package 2 (WP2), which focuses on establishing a harmonised transnational network of national biodiversity monitoring schemes across Europe. This role offers a unique perspective on the rapidly evolving European biodiversity monitoring landscape and opportunities to collaborate with diverse international networks at the science-policy interface.
The candidate will support the assessment of biodiversity monitoring schemes conducted by ministries of the environment and environmental protection agencies across Europe, synthesising this information to provide a comprehensive overview of current initiatives and identify gaps. On a daily basis, the candidate will assist the lead biodiversity monitoring officer, WP2 leaders, and relevant partners in implementing biodiversity monitoring activities within Biodiversa+.
Position
You will be part of the operational team, which plays a central role in implementing the partnership. The team currently consists of collaborators based in France, Belgium, Spain, and Finland.
The position is based at the Institute for Alpine Environment of Eurac Research (Autonomous Province of Bolzano, Italy) and reports to the Biodiversa+ manager at Eurac, working closely under the lead biodiversity monitoring officer at SYKE (Finland).
Travel within Europe is expected about six times per year.
Main responsibilities
- Facilitate coordination and knowledge exchange among Biodiversa+ WP2 partners by organising meetings, encouraging active participation, and supporting collaboration on biodiversity monitoring topics.
- Assist work package and task leaders with implementing biodiversity monitoring activities, including preparing background documents, documenting discussions, planning, and supporting connections with related European initiatives.
- Promote Biodiversa+ biodiversity monitoring work in collaboration with the communication team and support stakeholder engagement related to WP2.
- Support financial and administrative monitoring of WP2, including data collection for reporting and assessing EU funding use in biodiversity monitoring schemes.
- Organise activities related to the use of biodiversity monitoring data in private decision-making.
Candidate profile
- Master’s degree in biodiversity/natural sciences, ecology, European cooperation, or related fields.
- Professional written and spoken English; knowledge of German or Italian is an advantage.
- Experience synthesising scientific information and drafting reports.
- Strong organisational and coordination skills in collaborative research environments.
- Proficient in MS Office and experienced in facilitating expert workshops.
- Familiarity with biodiversity monitoring systems and international research cooperation is beneficial.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary, international teams.
